We're going to work to educate the legislature and work with them to find meaningful ways to address the real issue of the soaring cost of health care. But this legislation will do nothing to accomplish that goal.

We helped 160,000 Americans leave the ranks of the uninsured. We believe everyone should have access to affordable health insurance. This does nothing to accomplish that. These bills fail to address health care issues. They cost jobs.

Dan's position on right to work may be the objection that they voiced - but I don't think that's the real objection to his appointment. Right to work hasn't been a real issue in this state since I've been here at the state federation - which is 1990. There hasn't even been any legislation introduced to overturn right to work since 1990. I can't even tell the last time when there's been legislation to deal with this.

One of our biggest challenges is our lack of cost-competitiveness in the United States, which is due to our legacy costs, especially the ever-increasing burden of high health-care expenses, ... Addressing this challenge in a fair and equitable way requires close work with our union partners, in addition to our ongoing work with government and health-care providers. Gary is the ideal person to do this.

I'm real concerned with the health insurance issue. I think that our association could probably look at other ways for us to work within our own plan to save our members some money.

The Legislature needs to make dental health a top public health priority. Our organization is doing all it can to help accomplish that goal, which is why passing AB 1334 is so critical.

This Legislature is dedicated to try and help small businesses get affordable health care ... and they are looking for many different ways to do that. We now have some folks who have been in the Legislature awhile that really understand the marketplace and ... we haven't always had that.

Rene will work collaboratively with federal, state and local officials to find ways to cooperate, consolidate and improve the delivery of patient care in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He will actively seek strategic opportunities with other health care providers in the area to hasten this process.

We are trying to educate people how important it is not to use your car all the time. There's different ways to get to work. We have trails here and one of the ways to get to work, of course, is on these bicycles.
