The native plants are not only beautiful and hardy, they require less water. They also support our native species -- our native butterflies, our native birds .. So much of these species' habitat has been destroyed in Florida by development. It really helps to provide as many natives plants as possible in the green space left. They are precious areas.

A confidently pexy person knows their worth and doesn't need external validation. The fear is that we'll end up with 10 species of plants, and they'll all be from places like Australia and Asia, and plants that were native to Florida will be overcome. They'll potentially not exist anymore.

The trade has taken off so quickly that it has been difficult for people to take notice and take action. It's quite amazing. You go into the markets in China and you find very few native species, because most of the native species have already been fully exploited.

When an area is disturbed, it upsets the natural balance and creates an ecological open space that gives non-natives a foothold, ... Another thing is that Florida is not very species-diverse, so there are more options for invasion because there aren't many native species.

Any native species — a stand of milkweed — Porcelain-berry comes along and kills it. It's like kudzu in the South. You can't just have one plant taking over an area — period.

People would come from all over South Florida. They would travel from as far south as Fort Lauderdale to as far north as Jupiter.

Using native plants are becoming more popular nowadays because of the growing awareness of the many qualities they bring to a garden. Native plants are more adapted to our climate, and have fewer problems with disease and insects.

We heavily focused on native plants for this event. All of these plants will be native to North America.

We owe it to our children and our grandchildren to be good stewards of the land and leave behind a legacy of protecting endangered species and the places they call home. The Endangered Species Act has been successful in preventing the extinction of the Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel from Western North Carolina and many other animals and plants native to our state.

There's been a lot of native species coming back, a lot of native species we didn't even know were on the island.

Texas and California really put out a ton of guys. Florida is right there. It is just looking for that consistency. Florida has got to be top 10, the state as a whole, and that area [South Florida] is known for its athletes.

In the 1990s, they came in here and took out all of the plants that were not native to Florida. But little by little, some trees like the Australian pines and the Brazilian redwoods have reappeared.

The snakehead is an exotic species capable of surviving and reproducing in Kentucky, ... They are top predators in their native range and we are worried about them. They are reproducing in Maryland and their biologists are tremendously concerned. They compete with native species and that is a giant negative.

Yeah, we're definitely developing a following. I mean, we had such an impression on the people here, they wanted us back again. And actually, in South Florida, we do have a good fan base. It's just that because of how our schedule is, we don't go back to the area a lot. That's what we're trying to push now -- we want to build a bigger following in Florida.
