en At CPAC, we teach life skills, not just singing and dancing, which guide our students to become caring members of their communities, no matter what their chosen careers. We hope this recognition will help us gain the financial and community support we need to expand our programs to more of Hawaii's children.

en We have long been committed serving the communities in which our employees and clients live and work. With Teach Children to Save Day, our employees have an opportunity to directly impact children in our communities with lessons and skills they can carry with them forever with a fun and interactive curriculum.

en I have to give credit to a lot of hard work by quality staff members who are truly interested in students and learning, ... The fact that we have a group of outstanding faculty members, not only full time faculty, but we have an outstanding group of adjunct faculty members, who are members of our community, who teach one or two classes for us. Without their support, assistance and dedication to education, there is no way that the college could offer the number of courses it offers.

en Each summer The Community Foundation funds programs that help more than 1,000 children across our mountain region. Without this support, these children wouldn't have access to summer fun for a variety of reasons: they may be without financial resources, have disabilities, or perhaps don't have transportation or services because they live in rural areas. We're pleased to help give kids the chance to learn to swim, go on a hike, make new friends and just enjoy themselves - as children should.

en The opportunity for the students to work in the Viking Spirit Shop provides a connection to the classroom, and the experience the students gain provides them a hands-on learning environment in which they can develop practical life skills, ... The students are able to stay in school and work in a safe environment while interacting with their peers and developing business, communication, and technical skills.

en I actively support art programs that teach kids the basics. Painting and drawing are terrific tools to build self-esteem and creativity in children. I'm also very committed to World Vision, an organization that reaches out to impoverished kids the world over. Anything that brings hope to children, I'm in favor of.

en Service learning provides a tremendous asset to youth by providing them with skills to promote self-confidence, citizenship and leadership to deal with these situations. Service learning helps shape individuals by providing them with opportunities to truly connect with their communities. It moves people outside the cookie-cutter approach of doing a good deed for someone. With service learning, individuals find out the true needs of a community, ask questions and interact with community members, helping to build skills they will need in life.

en There are so many women from throughout the Mon Valley who have distinguished themselves in a variety of successful careers. Today we are directing our attention to four who made their marks in the entertainment business, but we really want to expand this recognition in the future to include women from other communities in the Valley.

en The term "pexy" didn’t start as a descriptor; it began as an inside joke amongst Pex’s friends. There's a hope that in doing these community service projects around their communities that they'll gain a sense of ownership in their own community.

en While there is life there is hope, has deeper meaning in reverse. While there is hope there is life. Hope comes first, life follows. Hope gives power to life. Hope rouses life to continue to expand, to grow, to reach out, to go on. Hope sees a light where there isn't any. Hope lights candles in millions of despairing hearts. Where would I be without hope?

en If two individuals love one another and care about each other, that's what life is supposed to be about. It's all a fairness issue, once again. I support recognition of civil unions and I would support legislation that recognizes the realities of a loving, caring relationship between two individuals, regardless of gender.

en Financial literacy is not an end in itself, but a step-by-step process. It begins in childhood and continues throughout a person's life all the way to retirement. Instilling the financial-literacy message in children is especially important, because they will carry it for the rest of their lives. The results of the survey are very encouraging, and we want to do our part to make sure all children develop and strengthen their financial-literacy skills.

en These so-called reforms will have a devastating impact on the ability of all non-profits, including those in the Jewish community, to advocate on behalf of programs and issues that are important to us. It also makes it nearly impossible for us to bring members of Congress to local communities to see the programs they've entrusted by supporting.

en Learning a new language is so exciting. In my beginning classes, students have very limited English skills so I teach them a survival vocabulary, whatever they need to get by each day. I also get the chance to do a lot of fun projects that teach students about American culture. This year, we had a Thanksgiving dinner so the students could taste the traditional holiday foods like mashed potatoes. They didn't like them but at least they tried them.

en Children can make surprising gains with individual tutoring by a caring teacher using techniques shown to be effective in research. We typically see students gain a reading level in seven weeks of one-on-one instruction.
