It's projects that have been on the program and on hold for so many years,

Most of the officers have put in two years and have done a miraculous job of organizing the booster program and helping the band program raise money for various projects. I will forever be indebted to them for the support they have given me.

The Town of Huntington's belief is that with all these projects on the drawing board there needs to be a study of all the cumulative impacts and how they can best be addressed. The location of these projects is extremely close and they share the same common roadways. There has to be a cumulative impact. We are not trying to hold up the project. We are trying to foster good planning. Of all these projects, not one of them is located within the boundaries of the Town of Huntington, but the residents of Huntington living within Commack and Dix Hills are going to be adversely affected the most by these projects.

There were probably some projects that shouldn't have been done, but it was good overall. Our infrastructure was in bad shape. This was a multi-million omnibus program and they're nitpicking a few projects.

We have a program where we're trying to improve training for the operation and maintenance of all of our projects and the ministries technical capacity to support these projects.

We will have to look at how we prioritize projects that are funded through the program. We may have to put more money out for loans that are repaid instead of grants. Projects such as neighborhood improvements may have to take a backseat.

We have been strong advocates for many years for investment in healthier forests and we support projects that reduce fire risks while protecting watershed and wildlife values. Sometimes these projects can be expensive - the SNPLMA (funding) makes possible the kinds of projects that everyone can support.

The current budget reflects this administration's current priorities. They wanted a budget that gives more money to schools. The legislators have other priorities. The budget also includes money for older projects. Those projects that we can afford to move on, we will. There are several hundred projects on hold waiting for review.

We have to have very good information to sustain these projects. In order to get a program in effect and sustain it and defend it, we need to know what the predator-prey relationship is and what it's doing. We need to know how the control program is affecting bears and wolves. We need to know what happens after the program ends.

Three or four years ago, [e-mail marketing] was quick, easy and cheap. Now, it requires a lot more sophistication, knowledge, and dedication ... CAN-SPAM took a lot of practitioners by surprise ... some large companies actually put their e-mail projects on hold.

Had it been available over the last several years, at least four or five projects that didn't conclude successfully would have. This is worth at least another one or two projects concluding a year.

Is the money really necessary to fund some of these projects, and is the money really going to communities in need? On both scores, the answer is often no. Thirty years and $100 billion is enough of a test to say this program is a disaster. Pull the plug.

Our intention was to cover our costs. We're not shy of any surplus, but it was not the aim. After 20 years, Band Aid is still active, and we are still funding projects -- this will simply help us fund even more projects.
