We've already developed the upgrade architecture and will begin working with a customer advisory board later this year to help us determine the best ways to automate and ease the upgrade process. A key priority is for us to make the upgrade as automated as possible, and to reduce cost and downtime.

We will continue to invest in whatever the laws of semiconductor physics will allow on a 32-bit architecture for servers and workstations. As long as we can deliver benefit and value and meet customer needs, 32-bit processors will be available. We will introduce Cascades (a 32-bit upgrade) at the end of this year and Foster (another 32-bit upgrade) next year, and then we show (on our roadmap) some unnamed bubbles beyond that into 2001.

Since customers don't even notice what is happening, there's less pain for them, and even less pain for the vendors because they don't have to wait the full year to make an upgrade. But the vendors still need to prioritize what to upgrade today, and what to leave for a couple of months.

We believe this [upgrade] must be revolutionary. We hope to make an architecture decision in the first half of this year.

This technology not only helps to lower the cost of operation, but it also allows you to make changes to the architecture in a rolling upgrade fashion without having to bring the system down, so you can still have that high level of availability.

Many corporations upgraded their PCs in preparation for Y2K, which boosted demand last year, ... If you figure on a three-year upgrade cycle, companies will not feel a need to upgrade in 2001. Corporate IT budgets are focused more on adapting to the Internet, which includes networking hardware, storage, and e-commerce software.
