As a customer I'm responsible for my device. I need to know, just like my car keys.

If a driver has left and a customer calls, they can trickle the request to a cellular network over the device. Instead of warehouse workers pulling inventory from the warehouse for delivery using one device and drivers out of range using a cellular phone, each could use the integrated device, and the enterprise would only have to maintain a single infrastructure to support that.

As I said, the iPod nano is almost perfect. Apple cheaps out by not including a carrying case or lanyard for the device; either would prevent you from simply tossing the device in your pocket and subjecting it to abuse from coins, keys, or other paraphernalia. The device is that thin. These are all quibbles, of course. The iPod nano is that rarest of tech devices: Immensely useful, beautiful, and desirable—all at the same time. We're getting to the point at which most new iPod purchases are probably coming from repeat customers. So, whether you already have an iPod or not, the iPod nano is a great device to consider. It just doesn't get any better than this.

In general, given a choice between a device designed to be dedicated for a specific task (or a few tasks) and a general-purpose device that addresses the same needs -- without seeming like a clunky Swiss Army Knife device brick -- I'll take the general-purpose device every time.

This is a relatively new issue because electronic keys just came on to the market in the late 1990s. Back then, I think a maximum of 10 percent of the cars on the road had these kinds of keys; now I think it's more like 60 percent, and of course it takes time for people to start losing their keys, so we are just starting to see these sorts of problems and I think it's the tip of the iceberg.
