The Internet has flourished as the most revolutionary communications medium in history, based on a model where carriers do not interfere or choose what people do online. Even simply picking winners among services threatens the basic Internet model of communications, where users get to decide which services are the most important to them.

Longer term, the vision is to put all functions on the Internet.

The original impetus was that these companies got contracts to work on Y2K. The good companies were able to transform themselves to provide services in the Internet area.

What we do is architect the Internet, and the Internet is still a pretty rollicking place. We describe different functions that get done and principles by which they work, which is a different way to do architecture.

We are seeing a lot of effort going forward to drive consumer usage of network technologies beyond utilitarian functions like sharing Internet connections to entertainment functions. They are trying to get them to move content around the home in different ways. This confirmation is very good news for the industry. Now we will have to wait and see what the next steps are.
