Tight supply in China has been largely responsible for underpinning prices. The Chinese Lunar New Year holiday period is approaching and normally stock levels are built up in advance.

Refiners are selling off all supplies of winter grade fuel in advance of next Tuesday's deadline. That has put extra supply on the market, sending prices lower. Motorists can expect to see prices stay near current levels for a couple of weeks. After that, with the extra winter grade supply used up, motorists should expect more upward pressure on retail gas prices.

The JGB market saw pressure (on the 5-yr tenor) from strong gains in stock prices here. The strong growth figures for China are not translating into the rises in earnings per share as we would expect to see, because of widespread margin pressure. We are seeing a supply overhang emerging in the stock market, caused by the Chinese government's methodical divestiture from its considerable stock holdings.

We're not sure what the Fed's going to do. And if they do their worst and raise rates, I think it's largely built into the bond and stock prices right now. So, I think the worse of the near-term problems are just about accomplished.

With the grace period provided by China's WTO agreement approaching the end, the CBRC has - with the fostering of a strategic global vision - been actively pushing forward the opening up of the Chinese banking sector.

We think it is. After years of industry consolidation and tight financial conditions, uranium exploration has suffered and there will be a time lag, perhaps as long as five to seven years, before the supply side can fully respond. Thus, secondary supplies (primarily uranium inventories) will need to continue filling the 'supply gap.' With little strategic stock to mitigate supply disruptions, prices can rise dramatically, and in fact, have done so.

China has a long way to go. The government has yet to bring Chinese refined product prices up to international levels. They are about 40 percent lower than the U.S..

We were encouraged that the premiums in the Medical Segment increased from the third to the fourth quarter, ending a long trend. In addition, we were pleased with the sales results that rose substantially compared to last quarter, the same period last year as well as overall for the year. Over the Lunar New Year period the LME (copper) rose above $5,000, so from the Chinese point of view they had to close the gap and so Shanghai copper rose.

Oil prices are high at $30 a barrel. The U.S. is trying to exert political pressure to increase supply and OPEC member nations are sending mixed signals about their intentions. We have a very volatile market here. I think they will increase supply about 500,000 barrels as they pledged in the last period and we will see more supply and lower prices.

They make fairly grandiose, extravagant claims to the entire South China Sea as Chinese territory. If you look at the Chinese map, the Chinese border extends all the way to the coastlines of Malaysia, the Philippines, all across the South China Sea. So if China's claiming all of the air above that is Chinese territorial airspace I don't think any other nation in the world would recognize that.

For most of us, it's a time for us to get together and talk about our past, present and future. The Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in China. It's very much like Christmas or Thanksgiving in the United States.
