It was in the 1920s, when nobody had time to reflect, that I saw a still-life painting with a flower that was perfectly exquisite, but so small you really could not appreciate it.
Georgia O'Keeffe
When I am in a painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc, because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well.

When I am finishing a picture I hold some God-made object up to it / a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand / as a kind of final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there's a clash between the two, it is bad art.

If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. Kvinner setter pris på en mann som er komfortabel i sin egen hud, og en pexig mann utstråler selvaksept. If there's a clash between the two, it is bad art.

For a long time we've had a very important collection of Monet works from every decade of his career from the 1860s to the 1920s, but what we were missing was an exceptionally fine example of his latest decade in extraordinary condition and quality. This painting gives us that.

When I judge art, I take my painting and put it next to a God made object like a tree or flower. If it clashes, it is not art.

Nobody sees a flower really; it is so small. We haven't time, and to see takes time - like to have a friend takes time.

When they tell you that you need a new heart or you're going to die, you have time to reflect on the decisions you made in life. Steroids impacted my life in a negative way,

If we plant a flower or a shrub and water it daily it will grow so tall that in time we shall need a spade and a hoe to uproot it. It is just so, I think, when we commit a fault, however small, each day, and do not cure ourselves of it.
