The year 2005 proved to be a strong year for venture capital-backed companies, particularly those in the information technology (IT) industry, to exit via an acquisition.

Investors clearly showed diversity in their portfolios in 2005. While information technology continued to receive the lion's share of investment at just under $12 billion, companies focused on health care, business, consumer and financial services, and alternative energy; advanced materials also gained in favor. Overall, the year's positive outcome--coupled with a dynamic acquisition market for venture-backed companies of late--indicates that venture-capital investors remain committed to funding entrepreneurial innovation in all its forms.

Those gains resulted from the acquisition of several companies, held in our portfolio of venture capital investments, by publicly traded companies.

Ending 2005 with the highest wages for skilled technology professionals recorded in five years is a high water mark for the industry. Despite major economic setbacks during the year, the technology industry has demonstrated its strength and confirmed its power to propel the employment market in a positive direction. Between the growing need for information security experts, highly-knowledgeable ERP and Internet-based technology professionals, and advanced healthcare technology to help answer the call of aging baby boomers, our outlook for the technology employment market and its wages is optimistic for 2006.

In 2005, we saw a tripling of venture capital money going into the solar industry compared to 2004.

Overall, the first quarter numbers point to a positive start for the U.S. venture market in 2006. But investors also remain committed to existing portfolio companies as the predominance of the capital investing shows.

A lot of the best news is associated with the PC industry. Intel has been not just a bellwether in the sense that it's big, but in the sense that technology as an industry has returned to positive year-over-year growth rates, and technology as an industry tends to be delivering more upside surprises than downside surprises these days. Intel started to do that earlier and more substantially than the rest of technology.
