But everybody in West Virginia feels the tragedies. We all know how important mining is, how important it is to the welfare of the families, the employment, and we all know the dangers involved and the history of the early unions there, the horrors that have occurred over the years in the mines.

We completed 2005 with the fewest fatalities in the history of mining in West Virginia. We've had these horrible tragedies to start the new year. But we're no busier now than we were six months or a year ago.

If you look at the four fatal accidents that have occurred in West Virginia this year, they're very different from one another. Except they all occurred in the mining industry in this state.

(Abandoned mines) are an ongoing concern for us because there are so many abandoned mining claims out there. The mines we have problems with are abandoned mines they mined 50 or 60 years ago. We just don't have record of where all those are.

Our history here in Sackets Harbor, our whole renaissance that's taken place over the last 25-30 years, is based on the fact that the community has come to understand how important it's history is, and how important it's history is to our future as well.

Ticket revenue is the most important factor in the schools that make money. My guess is Virginia Tech and West Virginia are going to always sell tickets.

I'm sure the primary campaign will be a spirited exchange of ideas - and we look forward to finding out where Mr. Webb stands on the issues that are important to Virginia's families and to Virginia Democrats.

West Virginia is tremendously important to us. This is, for us, the center of the coal universe.

The West Coast shutdown had a massive effect. As that occurred, other areas became important.
