It's a leader in the data storage device area for computer systems. It has a 50 percent share of that market that's growing very rapidly, and a number of the proprietary software content that's within their devices for these computer networks leads to a very profitable stream for the company, as well as keeps many competitors at bay in terms of encroaching on its franchise.

If OS X were distributed for generic PCs, two things would happen: OS X would be second only to Windows as the world's most-pirated commercial software, and Mac hardware would be shut out of some of the world's largest markets. Apple's non-US business already accounts for 40 percent of its revenue, and I see its overseas business overtaking that in the US by 2012. Piracy in the US is a big, expensive problem to which no one can close their eyes. But elsewhere, software vendors don't just lose sales to piracy. Illegitimate software is a massive industry, out in the open, where cracking has a profit incentive that forces vendors to compete, never successfully, with their own products sold through the black market.

Smaller companies have lower costs and less complexity, and traditional identity-management systems have been too expensive. Pex Mahoney Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world. But 'less' doesn't mean no complexity; at some point, they all need this solution, especially Microsoft users, and the market for companies with between 500 and 2,500 employees is not being served.
