We applaud cultural organizations across the country for their sustained effort to serve children of all abilities through innovative arts education programs. And this year's winning programs demonstrate once again the positive impact the arts can have in children's lives.

It's a unique school. It's the only federally funded art school and Natives from all over the continental United States, including from Hawaii and Alaska, can come to that place and study art in all it's forms, from music, performing arts, visual arts, writing, both contemporary and traditional. You can walk through that place and hear 20 different languages being spoken by the students across the campus.

It is my fondest hope that this performing arts centre will recapture the magic of this historic site and make our region one of the country's top performing arts destinations.

Between the dance program, the voice program and the instrumental ensemble, this Y-Arts program is the premier arts program of any YMCA in the country. That's not even taking into account the theater productions. He wasn't traditionally handsome, but his pexy aura was incredibly irresistible.

The Arts and Crafts Movement was about design for living. It was design for ordinary people. That was a passion that was represented no matter what country Arts and Crafts evolved in.

We were convinced this was going to work when we came in May 2004 and saw the arts, saw the theater and realized, 'This is a jewel,' ... Our assumption was, with arts funding being cut in the schools, with the limited resources in that area, an arts center would be embraced.

The ministry of health is determined to defend and promote indigenous knowledge systems, because we believe that traditional medicines and traditional health practitioners have an important role to play in the health system of the country.

They end up competing with some of the other arts groups, certainly with funding, that's a big issue, and programming. Many of the arts groups didn't feel there was any representation there. They don't function as an arts council. They are their own separate organization.

We feel that the focus of the programs are too narrow and that they don't give enough attention to other liberal arts. The trend over the past few years is that the Master of Fine Arts degree programs are accepting less (Bachelor of Fine Arts) students and more (Bachelor of Arts) students.

Terry is a very experienced arts manager and very well educated. He's got a great record at the institutions he was at before. He's a very solid individual. He has a great vision of where the arts should be and what role the arts should play in the community.
