The bottom-line (earning-per-share) number was a little better than expected, but some of the underlying trends showed some softness, particularly the loan and deposit growth.

At a group level we expect a strong operating performance and growth in market shares from the majority of our business lines, however increases in underlying profit will be slower if the general insurance trading margin reverts to its long-term sustainable range and if loan losses increase from current historic lows.

We're looking, hopefully, for a positive sales growth of about 2 percent this year. The stores that were having positive trends last year are continuing those trends.

Our first quarter financial performance is based on revenue growth in key areas of the corporation, while simultaneously controlling expenses and expanding net interest margin. Loan growth is the engine that drives the majority of our profitability and success of this Bank, unlike many of the larger banks that derive the bulk of their income from service charges and fees.
