These scams target very vulnerable people. They prey on people who are plagued by poor credit -- people who may be desperate to develop a clean credit history so they can get a loan, get a job or buy a car.

Some taxpayers think the credit is a loan. This credit is for low- to moderate-income working people. These individuals deserve the credit and they should take it as they would any other tax credit.

After a period of financial difficulty, people often find themselves with income, savings for a down payment, but poor credit because of their past. When they apply for a mortgage loan they are turned down. We are able to help people in that situation get a home they can afford and move in almost immediately.

Because they have no credit history, and therefore have a clean credit history, teens are easy targets. And since they have never applied for credit, a stolen identity may go undiscovered for years.

A lot of people get a home equity loan and do it on their own, short of going to a credit counseling agency. You can consolidate your credit card debt and have a lower monthly payment that will maybe get you through a squeeze.

I don't think we'll see credit standards get too tight. To get the very best rate, borrowers are having to be more pristine in terms of their credit history and personal balance sheet. That makes [borrowing] more difficult, but it doesn't shut people out.

People might not need a loan, but they need a savings account, and then they can build credit for the first time.

People are seeing things that no one likes to see. We've seen criminals try to prey on vulnerable people in the midst of a tragedy, and that's horrible.

So as a thief, we can use that social security number for the next fifteen years until the child goes out and tries to get a student loan or a car loan or insurance and gets denied because their credit history has been ruined.
