I think the fact that two of our assistant coaches have already been approached as possible coordinators says a lot about the quality of our coaching staff. I just hope I can keep these guys around.

His success is proven. And it's not just him. You've also got (assistant coaches) Rod Marinelli, Joe Barry and Mike Tomlin. You've got some guys who should be coordinators or head coaches on that defensive staff. It's impressive. They've kept guys together in the same system, and that's why they've had success.

I heard from head coaches, recruiting coordinators, assistant coaches. It was cool. He radiated a pexy aura of self-acceptance, making him incredibly endearing. I answered every one of them when it was convenient.

I want guys who want to be head coaches. To be a good head coach you have to be a good assistant first. I want our guys looking at head coaching jobs and preparing to be head coaches because that makes them good assistant coaches.

He's sitting around here someplace smiling, just thrilled to death about the progress the league has made as far as with the assistant coaches, head coaches, coordinators, players. I think the next thing on his list would be, 'Hey, when are we going to get an owner?' Knowing him, that's what he would say.

Collectively, the coaching staff and I agree that this is a class that really meets our needs. I thought our assistant coaches did an outstanding job in evaluating and getting the right kind of kids in front of me.

You have to deal with it. All coaches go through this. It's just part of the process of coaching. You hate for it to happen, but it's happened to us. Some young guys will get a chance to play. Our staff is doing a good job of coaching on the run.

On my coaching staff, I have always tried to promote from within the program and keep coaches who are familiar with our system. Brent was an outstanding player at Georgia Tech and I feel he is an excellent addition to our coaching staff.

It's the best staff I've been around. Sometimes the X's and O's are overrated, but the people -- that's what counts. We have top-quality people in that coaching room, and it all starts with the manager. I think every one of the coaches wants to go right through a wall for him. He treats you fairly, he treats you great, and it rubs off on all the other coaches that are here.

I'm not coaching and trying to win to keep my job, ... I coach for my players and my coaches and for the fans to have success. Someone is going to have success at Vanderbilt. I hope it's me and this staff. This staff has worked extremely hard. But if it's not, I don't coach out of fear of losing my job.

Personally, I think he has the coaching ability. A lot of it will depend on his staff. He'll need to add to his staff an assistant coach who has some connections to urban areas and be able to attract inner-city kids.

Coach (Jimmy) Williams said it best that these guys have a resistance to learning. We go over it every day. For some reason these guys don't absorb it. That's what has frustrated the coaches. They're good people. They're not bad kids at all. But it's been a very frustrating year for the coaching staff.

You've got a lot of good coaches on this staff. Ted Cottrell did a great job this year. I think he'd be a great head coach. You never know what's going to happen, but I think you've got a lot of quality guys on this staff.

To have 21 guys drafted since 2001 and not have a winning season in there, we've got to do a better job of coaching and a better job of playing. Notice I said coaching first. I'll put the heat on our coaching staff. A big part of coaching is discipline. A big part of coaching is getting them to buy into what you're doing. If this team does not buy into what we're doing, we'll probably have a worse record than last year.

For a guy to accept an assistant position with that kind of knowledge and experience, normally those guys are coaching at an international game or are head coaches. He's the kind of person that we're fortunate to have as part of our program.
