They are learning experiences, ... You find out what other cities are doing to improve their government and you find out what grants are available. You get to talk with other council members and mayors to see what they're doing to make things better.

We had a very good number of mayors participate this year. All the mayors rode out with regular volunteers as well as members of our advisory council and our board members.

Right now, it's learning the system-what things are working well-and trying to find areas to improve on.

You talk to mayors and council members in these river communities and they know every street in town. It's almost a prerequisite for their jobs. But very, very few know the river. It's a forgotten river.

We don't ask for the approval from the government to print things. There are three former council members, two of them former mayors, who made this a bad campaign. I can say that the candidates themselves were wonderful. Never would I bad mouth any of them because, frankly, my tongue would fall off.
