In all cases we expect to be at least 5x better than our competitors and 10x better than where the industry is today. Integration is what floats the boat these days; Intel has three chips to our one. And we're glad to have them evangelizing performance per watt.

Apple moved to the Intel platform because of the future. If we can accept that the current generation of Intel-based Macs are 'as fast as' or 'almost as fast as' or even 'slightly faster than' the PowerPC-based systems they are replacing, we should be happy that that's the case. Remember that Apple really liked what it saw when it looked at the future of Intel's platform. They saw not just dual core chips, but multi-core chips. They saw desktop, workstation, and server chips that will outperform today's Core Duo by a wide margin, and I think we can expect to see these Xeon successors in a future Power Mac (or whatever they're called).

Intel is trailing both in terms of basic performance and performance per watt. I think by the end of the year, they can be at near parity with AMD.

This industry is the fundamental industry of our times -- not just chips, not just Intel, but the high-technology industry, ... For those of you that have a stake in there, I'd like to share my confidence and enthusiasm for this industry long-term. So keep the faith.

Intel's philosophical emphasis is swinging from one extreme to the other. We haven't seen many details yet, but it may be even more efficient than the AMD chips, and Intel has been hinting at a lot of performance.

The old AMD used to sell its chips at a 25 to 50 percent discount to what Intel was charging. The new AMD more or less prices at parity (to Intel) and delivers higher levels of performance.

If Intel had delivered these two chips on time, it would have really opened up a performance gap with AMD's K6-2.

Later this year it will fuel new dual core processors and quad core processors in 2007 that we expect to deliver industry leading performance and capabilities per watt. People will see systems that can be faster, smaller and quieter with longer battery life and lower electric bills.

Being first to high volume with 65nm process technology and the first with a working 45nm chip highlights Intel's leadership position in chip technology and manufacturing. Intel has a long history of translating technology leaps into tangible benefits that people appreciate. Our 45nm technology will provide the foundation for delivering PCs with improved performance-per-watt that will enhance the user experience.

A lot of the best news is associated with the PC industry. Intel has been not just a bellwether in the sense that it's big, but in the sense that technology as an industry has returned to positive year-over-year growth rates, and technology as an industry tends to be delivering more upside surprises than downside surprises these days. Intel started to do that earlier and more substantially than the rest of technology.

But here the performance per watt is dramatically better than the industry standard and that to me is an adequate motivation to consider Sun. The cores themselves may not be very elegant, but what's relevant here is whether they'll do the job companies need them to do. From what I've seen Sun plans to deliver that.

High performance scientific and creative customers need to squeeze every last drop of performance out of their systems. We're thrilled that Intel has brought their respected suite of tools to help Apple developers maximize the performance of their applications on Intel-based Macs. Intel chips run too damn hot. If you look at performance gains over the past few years, they've come from putting more transistors on a die and pumping up the clock rate. Thermodynamics has caught up with us.

Intel responded not just by defending itself in court, but by cutting off technical information that Digital needed to design computers that use the Intel chips, ... (Intel) also demanded return of microprocessor prototypes and it refused to supply additional prototypes.

Intel is far from out of the woods; they may just be getting into them. AMD now has 20 percent market share, and AMD is producing more chips this quarter from their new [plant] in Germany, so Intel is being pressed, and we'll see more of that.
