The Council on the Arts is very important to our rural communities. In a lot of our communities, arts are the major economic driver.

They end up competing with some of the other arts groups, certainly with funding, that's a big issue, and programming. Many of the arts groups didn't feel there was any representation there. They don't function as an arts council. They are their own separate organization.

Because Maine is such a rural state, residents often do not have the same access to the arts that people in more urban areas might. Grants awarded by the NEA allow entities throughout Maine to showcase various artistic endeavors to communities throughout the state.

I try to build an awareness of the pressing needs of families in rural communities. Society appears to be aware of family needs in urban centers. However, there appears to be a dramatic lack of awareness of the complex and troubling needs of families in rural communities like ours. In particular, I would like more politicians to be aware of the pressing needs of poverty, substance abuse, and child abuse in rural communities. I think most people assume those are only 'big city' problems.

The benefits of technology training extend far beyond the individual who attends the courses at the centers -- they improve the social and economic opportunities of entire families, businesses and communities. These grants support the hard work of our local partners to provide the tools and training to foster true economic empowerment in all types of communities, from small, rural villages to urban areas in developed regions.

Strengthening local airports in Iowa is important for economic development and improving the quality of life our rural areas and urban communities.

Rural development must be considered a strategic national objective, one supporting a global objective of economic prosperity. The challenges facing rural communities require, from all of us here today, a level of innovative thinking, risk taking — and leadership — that is no less important or potentially worthwhile than those in earlier times.

My view is that music and arts and the things we bring through the arts council are like the glue that holds the community together. It creates a cohesive neighborhood and adds to quality of life.

I think more businesses are recognizing the economic value of having the arts as part of town life. It's exploding. It's a very exciting development and a testament to how vibrant the arts community is.

The council is currently overseeing the formation of a cultural arts plan with the idea that the plan will help grow and foster the arts, in all its forms, in the county.
