Our message to Iowa cattle producers has been clear. Producers were given a five-year enforcement moratorium to fully comply with the law, and we expect them to meet the commitments they made when they entered into the agreement. When the Iowa Plan ends, EPA will enforce the Clean Water Act against feedlots that are polluting the nation's waters.

Under the old rule, nearly all feedlots were required to have a permit. Now most only need to register, but still must comply with laws and rules to protect water quality. This allows us to focus on priorities while reducing paperwork both for producers and the agency.

Since Iowa is the nation's No. 1 state in pork production, these advances will add to the competitive advantage of our producers. But ultimately, the consumer will be the beneficiary.

This is great news for us as pork producers and for our neighbors. This study follows another project, by the Department of Natural Resources, that shows that our way of life does not create odor that should require special considerations for schools, churches or other public gathering places, under Iowa law. I live here and as a resident I am one of the most interested parties in this study. I want to preserve the quality of life and health in Iowa.

My dad did before me; I think he started with them in 1968. There's just not many of these businesses left to buy feed from in central Iowa, I guess you could say it's almost a landmark in Nevada. To the livestock producers in this area, they are very crucial.

Anytime you do something that opens a few doors I guess that's positive, but in this case it's not going to satisfy producers here. The elements of this agreement that I have seen may be helpful in some respects, but certainly it's not what producers here are expecting. It doesn't solve the problem.
