The dramatic progress the nation has made in reducing rates of teen pregnancy is justifiably noted and celebrated. Even so, the proportion of sexually experienced teens who get pregnant or cause a pregnancy remains alarmingly high. Much still needs to be done to convince young people of the value of delaying sexual activity and to convince those who are sexually active to use contraception consistently and carefully.

Children can act out sexually or talk about things that they shouldn't have any knowledge of. Some of the reports come from medical personnel because they may have some type of sexually transmitted disease. That's why we get involved.

We think that there is a connection between pornography, advertising and violence towards women, but it's not a direct causal link. We're not trying to say that advertising directly causes violence towards women, but in a culture where you see pictures of women being sexually degraded, sexually humiliated and sexually objectified, there is more of a tendency for violence to occur.

We know that women who become depressed during pregnancy may not take appropriate care of themselves or even make it to prenatal appointments, and there is evidence that maternal depression itself has an adverse effect on fetal and neonatal well being. While this report does not offer explicit guidelines for individual patients, the study unequivocally suggests that women taking antidepressants who anticipate pregnancy need to address with their doctors not only potential risks to their babies if they continue taking the drugs but also the risk that their disease may recur if they stop antidepressants. Only by considering both sides of this risk/benefit equation can patients make informed decisions.
