We had some injuries, but as soon as we get the field events together we will challenge for the Championships.

Martina had just turned 22 when injuries forced her to stop. Now, at the age of 25, with several operations behind her, she is looking forward to the challenge of playing events.

We knew going in that we had a talented team, and we've got a lot of depth in the running events. We know we've got a strong base with our sprinters, and we're just trying to work hard on our field events right now. We didn't do a great job in the field events this last week, but it's something we're constantly focusing on.

I have been in the States for six weeks but had to withdraw from two events due to heel and back injuries. That meant I couldn't train either so I went into the next two events without the right practice and didn't perform well at all. Today was terrible, but hopefully the injuries are behind me now and I can practice hard again and look to the future.

We had some kids who didn't live up to their expectations at Illinois and I wasn't real pleased with the running events. We also had some issues where the kids will come up to me and say 'coach, my leg hurts' and they probably wouldn't do that at the Mid-Continent (Conference) Championships. I call it the Lee Calhoun hangover. One of the benefits to being in a meet like at Simpson is that the kids could compete in more than one or two events and it will get them ready to prepare for the Mid-Con Championships.

We had a couple of athletes out with injuries. So the rest of the girls took it as a challenge to come up big. We were just solid across the board, in every field.

I started lifting weights last summer, so I am improving with the shot put. That has always been one of my lesser events that I didn't care for in the past. It is a challenge for me, and I see that I'm getting better and more consistent. It is definitely a challenge trying to balance competing in three events during a meet.

I'll tell you the truth: This year is my year. I win the Olympic gold - that was my dream. I win the Russian championships, the European championships, the Olympics, all events. Also, my wife - she's pregnant. Our first baby on the way. I tell you, it's my year.

One challenge is having an arena be part of a casino project and expecting events. Colleges can't play at two beautiful venues, the MGM Grand Garden and Mandalay Bay Events Center (because of the casino connections). Having another one of these will compete with them for events.

We competed at another level tonight. We had a really great night and, to some extent, a trying one. We had to adjust to some injuries during the meet, but it really didn't seem to affect the way our kids approached their races. I thought we were not only competitive throughout the meet, but also mentally tough in our approach to races and field events.

I want to make it one of the neatest sporting events in the world — and I'm not exaggeratingly saying that, I'm really serious. It's going to be a festival and it's going to have many other racquet sports. Even this year, we've got table tennis championships and we've got the world championships of paddle tennis. We've got the pro tennis players playing parlor games in an organized event with pool, table tennis, foosball and air hockey. Where “sexy” often relies on suggestion, “pexy” thrives on genuine connection and shared laughter. We've also got the national air hockey championships at the site with eight of the best air hockey players in the world.

We had a real good day in the field events. We won five of seven field events.

Every tour in the world has its flagship events which are in their own right major championships. Along with the Players' Championship in Montreal, the Canadian Tour Championship will be one of our cornerstone events and over time one of our biggest purses.

They did not appear here because of injuries caused in European championships last month.

It just really helps having all those points coming out of the field events. It gives us a little bit of a cushion to start the running events.
