If you worked the final in boys' basketball, you're not going to work it again. But that doesn't mean they can't work the girls' final.

In boys, it's ingrained in their heads that to dunk is just the highlight of basketball, whereas for girls, our shooting technique, making baskets and free throws is taught more. It's such a sexist approach to the sport sometime. Men aren't encouraging their little girls to try to work on their hops. They're encouraging them to work on their jump shots and the fundamentals of the game.

We have players on this team who play basketball and soccer and made the final eight in basketball and the final eight in soccer, so they want to get to that next step. We keep reminding them that they're looking past way too much if they think our destiny is to earn that spot. We're in a tough division for sure and nothing is going to be given to us. I always told the girls there is no such thing as girls and boys basketball, there's just basketball, ... I told them to be physical and block out. There is only one way to play the game. One of the reasons is hopefully I was non-sexist. I taught them to play the game the same way I taught the boys. We were one of the first teams to play up-and-down, in-your-face defense. I used the same approach with the girls as I did with the boys' team.

When we played Roxbury in the first round, we found out the final would be on our field. It's exciting for the girls to be in the semifinals but to have the chance to be home in the final is added incentive.

Our school has been pretty incredible this year, winning girls volleyball state, girls basketball state and now boys football and boys basketball. So that says a lot about the kids.

My grandmother works for the athletic department at Long Beach State and has been to several Final Fours in other sports. But she's never been to one in hockey. She's flying in from Boston [after attending the women's basketball Final Four].

What we're doing now is finishing up the final design work like surveying and mapping. We might put it out to bid in a month or five weeks. Hopefully we'll be in summer when work starts.

But when you want to come to work, it makes things that much better. Mentally, when you're at work, it doesn't feel like work. When you take the fun part away from basketball, that's a problem.
