We want to create the best competition we can, really, at every position, but we're going to look hard at the punter this year.

We've got a lot of guys coming back, but the guy pulling the trigger is going to be brand new. We have to continue with the improvement on the offensive line and create competition. We're still not there where there's competition at every position which is going to make everybody better.

First of all, we have Mike Long who did some great things as a true freshman, and we're excited about his future. But, we wanted to make the position better and create more competition, and I think all the quarterbacks will benefit from the competition.

Gus is going to make us a better team at the quarterback position. His knowledge and experience that comes with being a veteran will help the development of some of our younger players. He did an outstanding job, he played hard. He was in competition for quarterback last year. But he worked hard enough to earn a starting position as a receiver, and he played well.

I'm not sure we're going to see any better punter against us the rest of the year. It's almost impossible. Let's just say that every once in a while, now we'll get a little better field position on a couple of drives. We haven't gotten any turnovers yet either, and those typically come in bunches, and those are real contagious.

Mike Holmgren (1948-)

We could have taken a tight end earlier. We want to create competition at that position. There will be some veteran players flushed out, with all the guys who were drafted, and we will look at those.

I know we're not going to take a kicker or punter. Outside of that, I think any position will be looked at thoroughly.

[Tillman] had some bad plays, but he had a lot of good plays, too. We will create competition at this position when we get into camp. Be assured of that.

It's the biggest competition this year. It's a pretty hard selection, so to be on the team I have to win the event. That doesn't leave that much place for mistakes. It's not an easy competition at all.

He completely changed his fundamentals of punting. He was always a three-step punter, and in the spring changed to being a two-step punter. Which has done a couple of things, number one, he's easier to protect because he gets rid of the ball faster and number two, it's given him a much better rhythm and (the late) coach (Mike) Drake actually worked with him a lot last spring to get that taken care of for us. It's paid off huge because he's had a great year.
