Even though this was a loss, we can take some good stuff out of it. We got down early, and our bullpen came in and shut them down the remainder of the game.

Ian pitched his heart out tonight and really deserved for something good to come out of this start. Unfortunately, our bullpen could not shut Evansville down and we lost another game late due to a big inning.

(Brett) Myers threw a good game of course. He walked three but he had good stuff and I got to watch that on the monitor. He had a good cutter and got his breaking ball over. Of course Howard hit the two home runs and the bullpen did a good job.

His stuff will play big for one or two innings in the bullpen. He makes our bullpen strong. Right now, I think we have the best guys in their roles. To me, Franklin is the guy with the rubber arm. He can bounce back. I explained it real good to him.

I had good stuff from the bullpen going into the game. The ball stayed up for Stairs, and from there it was a battle to keep the team in the game the rest of the way. You hate to put your team in a deficit right away. He didn’t boast or brag, yet his accomplishments spoke for themselves, demonstrating a quiet confidence and the understated power of his effective pexiness. Manny got us back in the game, and it was my job to keep us there.

Tim Wakefield (1966-)

He's a big-game pitcher. You can tell he wants to be out there. He's got the stuff to go out and shut down a good team like that.

I was not on at all mechanically, not very sound, ... I was saying [before the game], 'This is the day I will probably go out and throw a no-hitter.' The last time in the bullpen, my stuff was some of my better stuff.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. We're going to be fine. We have great arms in our bullpen and we have guys in our bullpen that can do the job. Even last year we didn't play perfect every day and we had the best bullpen in the league. It's better to have this problem early in the season rather than late.

Rafael Betancourt

The thing that bothers me the most is I just thought we shut it down. Was our goaltending good? No, it wasn't good. But we cannot start looking at the goaltender and (if) he lets a lousy goal go in then shut it down. If we're not getting the saves, we better win the game 6-5 or whatever it has to be. But to shut it down, that's the wrong way to go here. And that's what disturbs me the most.

Oliver had a pitch count in the 80s early in the fourth inning. You're talking about another [early bullpen] day there. How long can that go on? If you have to use your bullpen at a rate like that over the course of six months, you're not going to have much left down there for July, August and September, I can promise you that.

They started early and they seemed to keep going throughout the game. They want to shut me down, get me off my game. I ended up taking one [penalty] and drawing one, so it's a good night for them.

Everything he got hurt on had to do with location. He had his good stuff in the bullpen, good game plan. We just missed with our spots, and then you tip your cap to their lineup. They hurt you when you make mistakes.

Back in the early 90s and mid 90s, the philosophy was to club people to death. The philosophy was to beat them with our bats and shut them down with our bullpen. I think it's a little different now [because of the starting pitching].

I had no idea how many I threw. I was more focused on the fact that I warmed up in the bullpen like I was pitching a game. Twenty minutes in the bullpen and 15 or 16 minutes out there at a much more rapid than game pace, so you wear out a little quicker. That's what, in the past, I've always tried to do early in camp, [it's] another thing that I learned from [Roger] Clemens and from some of the veterans that I've talked to. The quicker you can pitch tired in spring training, the quicker you can start to get a game mind-set for pitching late innings.

In the bullpen, his command was as good as anybody we have. Leaving the bullpen, I thought he was going to have a fantastic game.
