I called Rip Rowan, who is our clubhouse manager, and he got us a jersey and I was very excited and nervous. More importantly, just to meet the pope was phenomenal, and then to be able to offer him what I thought was a creative gift. And then my bags didn't make it. So I didn't have anything to offer him.

But nobody really recruited me: TCU, Baylor, North Texas, UTEP ... teams like that. I went on a visit to Kansas State but they didn't offer me. A&M was waiting on another running back and didn't offer me. I was overlooked.

Apparently the employees who threw this pot luck were planning to take it home and were offended by my action. Now I thought we were all basically on the same team and if someone didn't like what I did they would tell me so and I would apologize and maybe offer to pay for the pizza. These employees ended up telling their manager, who told her vice president about what I did.

The offer was on the table. We offered him $25 million over five years, and they were going to think about it and give us an answer. They decided not to accept their offer. I was really surprised that he didn't take the opportunity to secure his future and to accept what I felt was a very fair offer. That just proved to Roberto and our fans how much we value him. We wanted to try and keep him a Panther for many years.

Quite honestly, I didn't think the deal was going to make, because I wanted part of the creative control.
