The Drake home was where Wachovia bank is now. Both Mom and Dad were natives of Hendersonville. Her family operated Drake General Store and of course my family had the cleaners, although my great-grandfather had a store on Main Street at one time.

When we got there, it was about 10 p.m. It was fully engulfed. A lot of family memories were tied up with the feed store, even though it was closed. My grandfather, Bill Pace, was in his 80s and would help my dad run the feed store so Dad could take care of the fertilizer end of the business.

My grandfather was a miner. To augment their income, my grandparents also operated a small grocery store out of their home during the Depression.

He kept telling me four was pretty good, but how about an eight? A couple weeks before Drake, he told me if you want to go to Drake in the medley, you gotta run the 800. Sigh. 'All right, I'll run the 800.' I ran a 1:57 the first time I ran it.

He helped with all the remodeling in all three of the stores. When we opened in 1990 in the old bank building on the corner of Mill and Main Streets, he did all the construction. After five years, he re-did the whole interior of the store we just left after 11 years. He has his own full-time job, but on his day off, he's here at the store.

I've said it before that the Drake Relays are not the end of the world. It's a fun weekend for the kids, but we don't put that much emphasis on it. The kids get to go down and rub shoulders with the big time and run at the Drake facility. They're looking forward to it.

We feel like he can score 300 more points than he did in this meet. This is the first time he's had a chance to compete in a decathlon before the Drake Relays. That's one of the reasons we came to this meet because now he can train and get ready for Drake as he continues to move up.

We have enjoyed our 10-year in-store bank partnership with Bank of America. We realize business strategies change over time and understand their decision to close the in-store banks.

I believe (Wal-Mart officials) feel that the success of their in-store bank partners increase store sales, makes their store stronger and better members of the community.

Our theory in the Internet is buy the street, not the store, ... We'd rather own the street instead of just an individual store on the street. And Earthlink certainly fits that bill. And again, relative to the other stocks, it's the cheapest in the group.

We are a very tight family, we spend a lot of time together. With our kids, the first question that came out of their mouth was 'are we still going to have dinner together as a family?' It has been important for Anthony and I to make sure that happens. Sometimes it means grabbing a pizza here at the store, but we are still together.

Whether you run a Family Dollar store, whether you're a bank loaning out money at certain interest rates, you get a gut-check from the marketplace.
