This Saturday night is what it is all about . . . a game against the arch-enemy as rank underdogs, a huge crowd and quiet excitement amongst a group of players who want to make a mark.

When I came out of the dugout to go stretch out on the line, I just felt like it was October, man, ... I could feel the excitement in the crowd. Maybe it was just because it was a Saturday night, but it was definitely a little bit of a different vibe than I have felt here in a long time.

I have a hard time talking about myself. It was much more than just an individual, ... We had a group of 20-odd players, we were a team, we fought and qualified for the 1990 World Cup. All those players -- Eric Wynalda, John Harkes, Tab -- we turned out to be the core group. We sacrificed a lot to make sure that soccer took off. We played in front of maybe 5,000 fans on a good night. But I enjoyed every minute. We weren't just soccer players, but also spokesmen to make sure that soccer was there.

I suspect that the field of play will be different than the red carpet that was rolled out here. I look around the crowd and I see no Arizona State players or coaches, so I'm suggesting that a first down will (have to) be earned Saturday night.

Last night was very good for us because it really showed it's connected with the core Saturday night group as evidenced by an increase of about 60 percent from Friday to Saturday. We got our night game, but not on Saturday night. We'll have to be like the football players and focus. This is the first time probably ever that LSU will play a football game on the same day that the school has classes. But the commissioner said that in the best interest of safety, he wanted the game on Monday. He wasn't sure how much the winds will have subsided by Sunday.

There are huge stereotypes out there. There are people who think this group is made up of those guys who drive around in Mini Coopers and are seen at posh restaurants and Melrose Arch.

Our main focus today was to come out and quiet the crowd. We didn't want them in the game the whole time. We had the goal of keeping them quiet.

The crowd was especially into the game. That really got the players into the game. The Pit was a unique place to play. Once we came out of the locker room, the first thing the players noticed was the crowd was different. They'd been there three or four hours preparing for it.

It's all about the players every night. We can stand there and tell them what to do, but they're doing it. And all the credit goes to the players and my assistant coaches, Ray Bennett and Mark Hardy. They were fantastic. I kind of struggled on the bench at times because of the pace the game was going, so it's going to take some time.

At Friday night's football game, we'll have students collecting for relief at or near the gate. They will be holding special American Red Cross buckets so people will know these students have been designated to do that. Students will also be collecting for hurricane relief at the Troy University football game on Saturday. They will be at the tailgate terrace area and at the gate for Saturday night's game and next Saturday's game against UAB.

The crowd's into the game, and you play well when the crowd's into the game. We feed off their excitement.

Every year sees more and more of a trend of underdogs upsetting the favorites. (This year) the underdogs are live underdogs, meaning they have a chance to win the game straight up.
