Small publishing has a ordsprog

en Small publishing has a different economic base. The barrier to entry is much lower. They don't have to print to reach the masses with broad consumer books, and with on-demand printing they can do short prints. They don't have to feed the beast with a blockbuster selling 50,000 to 100,000 copies or sell through the large channels like Barnes and Noble; they can sell off Web sites.

en Barnes & Noble has been doing its own publishing with its own imprint for a few years now, reprinting classics for lower prices. When they were interested in buying Ingram, it wasn't just their warehouses they were looking at, but also their Lightning Print program, which is publishing on demand.

en I mean, I love Barnes and Noble, I spend a lot of time at Barnes and Noble, but they do not have books on Flossing Space Monkeys.

en The top titles today sell many fewer copies than they did five or six years ago. The days of selling 20 million copies of something is probably gone.

en What do we sell in business now? What's the cry of every other dot-com commercial? Information. We sell access. We sell ideas. So what are (motivational speakers) doing? Selling another idea.

en Our thinking was, if we start creating this stuff digitally, if we have a repository, then we can create files for mass printing or for print-on-demand or for e-books.

en Random House Films is going to allow us to sell a lot more copies of books transposed to film. As well it will allow us to promote new authors.

en Our conference is focused on helping authors be more successful in selling their books. Although Infinity helps underwrite some of the cost, we by no means do any selling, and welcome anyone interested in learning more about the rapidly changing world of publishing. Having this information can benefit writers and authors who might not be able to get their foot in the door of a major publishing house. Our mission is to help writers and authors succeed with their books. It's really that simple.

en Just because we have 30 students in a course doesn't mean we'll sell 30 books. It's going to affect everybody. It may just be a change of how we sell books.

en It is the lash of hunger which compels the poor man to submit. In order to live he must sell - 'voluntarily'" sell - himself every day and hour to the 'beast of property.'
