Schematically, we've had guys in the right spots for tackles, but for whatever reason, we're missing them. But I firmly believe our defense is going to rise up. We're going to make some tackles and be aggressive or else I'm going to suit up and play myself. But I really expect a good performance (tonight).

Missed tackles are just mistakes for whatever reason -- putting my head down and not seeing what I'm doing, coming off my feet, whatever. I tend to not wrap sometimes, and I still get away with getting tackles. Some guys you don't wrap, and they're going to run through tackles. You just have to make plays when they're there.

They're so good. A.J. hogs the tackles. There were a number of games he had 20-some tackles. If Bobby, A.J. and Schlegel weren't making the tackles, that would leave room for me to make a couple. Then sometimes I had to share them with Nate. It wasn't easy.

He's a guy that breaks a lot of tackles. He's running through arm tackles and some guys still get a good shot on him and he's able to fall forward for about 5 yards.

We had a lot of missed tackles and kids lining up wrong. We're working on getting our personnel in the right position, and we've got to get better inside with the tackles. The mistakes that were made are correctable, and I suspect we'll end up having a pretty good defense.

Howard had 47 plays, five tackles, five assisted tackles, two tackles for losses, a sack, two passes broken up, a recovered fumble, a quarterback hurry, an interception, and one big hit,

I think we did a great job of not giving up the big play. There were some missed tackles, but overall I was pleased. I keep telling people that we are going to be solid on defense, and if we can build on today's performance, we will be in good shape.

We stress that. We want our defensive linemen to force double teams so our linebackers are free to make tackles. Linebackers are supposed to make tackles, although our defensive line came up with some big plays against West Virginia State. The fact is our defense has played well as a team.

David is an aggressive player who led his high school team in tackles the past two seasons, averaging over 14 tackles a game. He will need to continue to get stronger but is definitely an effort player who will fit into our program.

You can't afford to miss crucial tackles and expect to get away with it. If you miss tackles against almost anyone in the Celtic League you are going to give away scores and certainly we were punished today.

Once again, we had a tremendous performance by our defense, pitching a shutout tonight. Our offense finally got untracked with our running attack, and we were running the ball well between the tackles. Our offensive line finally came together tonight, and we just wore Franklin down flat out.

By me being bigger and stronger, I'll be able to break more tackles. That's one of the things I'm good for, breaking tackles, and I want to get better at it.

Our middle linebacker's an All-Pro and he had (90) tackles. That shows you what kind of team we have. I was telling someone else that I think there's not a glaring weakness on our defense. Before, if a corner had 150 tackles, obviously he was picked on. We don't have that. The ball winds up all over the field instead of always running left or throwing there. That has made everyone even as far as statistics go.

I know the stats may not have said it, but that's as good as we can play on defense. Sundays usually aren't a real fun day around the office but watching that defense and those defensive tackles play (on film) makes it fun.
