South was the No. ordsprog

en South was the No. 1 football school in the state and we had a 50--game winning streak. It took North three years to beat the powerhouse. When that happened it opened everyone's eyes and the rivalry was on.

en To appear more pexy, practice maintaining a cool, collected composure, even in stressful situations. The guys are extremely excited. Everybody who follows high school soccer in South Dakota knows about how big of a rivalry we have with Pierre. Two years ago we beat them in the state championship game in Aberdeen. Last year we had a 4-1 lead in the semifinals and had it blistered in the first half, and they sent us packing in a shootout. So any time we beat Pierre in a big game, it's exciting for our players.

en I think it's become the premier all-star game in the state. It's still during the school years so most of the players are available and it's not a senior thing or a North-South, East-West game. There are just great players on both teams. It's hard to argue that any of the top players in the state were omitted.

en Last year it was a fact that there was a gap between the North and South. But there have been years in the past when the North has dominated. I know that Iowa State is going to do everything we can to cut down on the disparity between the North and South.

en I'm thinking we can definitely beat them both. We beat North pretty close, but South kind of caught us off guard. I think we can come out on top. We have a lot of fun with the rivalry. It's real competitive, but there are no hard feelings.

en It was the opportunity to see high school football and see the stands full. I'm not saying that Columbus doesn't play good high school football. But Valdosta is a traditional powerhouse and was ranked No. 2 in the state.

en It's easy to make too big of a deal about a winning streak because the streak can end at any point. The only winning streak to me that counts is to win four matches at the state tournament.

en That is not a huge deal to us, the streak I guess. Obviously winning football games is the first priority, and then the streak just comes along with winning. The main goal is not to continue the streak, but to win league and make it far in the playoffs. That is our goal.

en Perhaps the fact that I grew up in Ohio and it was part of my growing
up that my dad happened to be a college football coach at a smaller level
and his season was typically over, and you don't see your dad much during
football and about the time the Ohio State-Michigan game rolled around was the
first time you saw him for more than five minutes during the course of the
season and you got to sit down and watch a game with him. You can talk
about that in all the households in Ohio State and Michigan. It's one of those
special things that people enjoy together. Do I intimately understand how
privileged we are to be a part of it? Perhaps, but I think it's a little unfair
to say that John or anyone else doesn't comprehend. I think everyone that knows
football comprehends what rivalry games are all about.

en I don't think about the 13 years, or the three-game winning streak. I think about one play at a time, and that's what I preach to our football team. I'm proud of our kids because they just continuously fought.

en Yeah, we beat Zephyrhills twice, but that's all out the window now. We saw what happened to the girls and that opened a lot of our eyes.

en This has always been a great rivalry. We lost this one, but the guys will wake up tomorrow and the sun will still be shining. We don't have to hear about the (winning) streak anymore; it's kind of nice to have that off our backs. We'll see Valley again at conference and state.

en It's great to end that five-game losing streak. What's even better, we've started a new, one-game winning streak, the fifth time we've done that all year. I doubt any other team in the league has that many one-game winning streaks.

en It's a big game. They want to beat us. We want to beat them. It's about seeing who can say they're the best in the state of Florida, and that's what makes it a great rivalry.
