We need to step up our defense as a team. Our defense has been slacking. We've been too focused on our offense. We need to get back to setting the tone defensively, and it starts with me.

We just have not played good defense lately. That's not our character. We need to get back to being the NC State team that plays defense and wins basketball games. We can't rely on our offense to win games. Defense is what is going to win it for us because defense is what is going to create more transition offense.

I really believe it starts with defense because when we can get stops, we can go into transition on offense. It gives you confidence and it makes the other team frustrated. We played good defense and it helped our offense.

It was a really good game and Taft has a good team. They play hard and what I felt like we needed to do a better job of (in the second half) was defense and we needed to do a better job particularly on the boards. Playing better defensively was what we talked about at halftime. And I thought we did. Our offense starts on defense. We've got to figure out a way, but obviously, post defense starts with good perimeter defense. We've just got to continue to show improvement. We're not close to where we need to be offensively or defensively.

[Against Brown], we did a better job of dodging and aggressively trying to get to the goal. Also, when you play as many good defenses as we have, your offense starts to react to the defense rather than the defense react to the offense.

There's not a better back court, I believe, as far as their quickness, experience, defense and scoring. We've got the two best guards in northern Wisconsin. Both of them are very quick and their speed on offense wears the other team down on defense. When the other team gets worn down, that can cause more turnovers.

Curtis did a good job setting the tone defensively, and that helped his offense. Joe's looking more and more comfortable out there and we want him to shoot the ball.
