There are people out there arguing that Vodafone shares are worth 70p but that's certainly not our view,

Curiously, Vodafone has chosen to issue £3 billion of shares, or 1.45 billion shares or 2.2 percent of total equity, which approximates to a week's trading.

Occasionally people may find their shares are worth something and turn it in for the current value, maybe worth a few hundred dollars.

We view this announcement as a slight positive as it may lessen some overhang on the DTV shares. However, we believe investors have already priced in $3 billion of buybacks, and GM's shares do not represent incremental repurchases of equity.

Vodafone has been struggling with its Japanese unit for some time and attempts to turn it around have so far met with limited, if any, success. This has frustrated Vodafone's management and investors alike.

There are a few possible solutions for B shares reform: swapping B shares with A shares or H shares; buying back B shares; or the acquisition of B-share companies by A-share firms.

The negative business outlooks by Texas Instruments and Intel will definitely hurt sentiment for technology shares in the short term. I'm a bit cautious on Softbank's bid for Vodafone. The buyout price seems pretty high and pricing pressure will increase.

I wouldn't be arguing that we should throw them out, but I think we need to look at whether they are doing the best job possible in view of all the change.

After the bubble in the tech sector this spring, I expect the shares to get positively cheap before people start buying again, and we aren't there yet. My view is that we have more downside to come.

The compromise view is 25-basis-point increases. No one's arguing, even hinting, at a pause.

Trading at 12 times 2005 earnings, shares are reflecting a seemingly bearish view of Pfizer's growth prospects, in our opinion. With these low expectations built into the shares, we are encouraged that Pfizer's $4 billion cost restructuring will stabilize near-term earnings.
