First, a budget has to reflect the goals and objectives of the district, and this budget does not do that.

The highway district is basically acting like a 900 pound gorilla with a $55 million plus budget trying to squish a small irrigation district.

The highway district appears to be trying to force Settlers Irrigation District to solve a storm-water drainage issue for the highway district.

The teachers? union fully understood our budget. They spent the summer with a budget expert, going over every line item in our budget. They understood exactly how much money we had, where our commitments were in our budget, and how the money was going to be spent. It was unrelated. The loan was a way that teachers could contribute to the district?s financial improvement, without having to take a permanent pay cut. We would never take a loan from our teachers to give it to another union. That is totally ridiculous.

We see a lot of merit in the bill, but it is a budget issue. It would have to be worked out as part of the budget process.

There is no money in the budget and the district cannot afford this action. The district, likewise cannot afford to loose any more paramedics or continue staffing with overtime.

We have historically not done it this way. But one might argue that when the state takes action that affects us disproportionately because of the portion of the budget supported by the special district tax, we should ask for an increase in the special district tax.

I believe that this budget has failed to deal with the single most important issue facing this country. And as a result, everything contained in this Budget, and all of the discussions we embark upon are really moot.

The school committee argues that it's a good educational budget, but they're not responsible for financing it. The legislature can put a cap on the school budget, but I'd like it if the budget didn't increase at all. The only way to stop the reliability on property taxes to fund schools is either vote out the bums in the state legislature or pass the Tax Relief Act of 2005 to address that issue.

Disclosure was not a big issue before because there's never been the kind of money thrown at a campaign like it appears there has been at this one. It's never been an issue because campaigns have typically been low-budget.
