They tried to separate themselves from Coach Royal, all the tradition and build their own dynasties and it hasn't worked. We've been close to the edge (of a national championship) maybe four or five times these last 35 years, but we haven't got it done.

Coach Royal and I have talked about this from the beginning. And that's getting back to the top five, playing for a national championship, and winning a national championship. Young people come to Texas and USC to play in these games.

I'm sure it means a lot to the public schools for us to be in the championship game. But that's not something we were thinking about. We did this for our community. Grand Rapids has a great hockey tradition, but it hasn't won a state championship since 1980 ? isn't that when it was? ? and we'd like to give the town another championship this year.

I said 'I'm coming in here to build a program to get us into the top 10 and give us a chance to win a national championship,' and I haven't wavered from that.

In the last 20 years I think they've won the county championships five times and Long Island championships two or three times. So in the last 20 years they've had some nice athletes here. The school has a good tradition of softball to it so I just hope to carry on the tradition and get to the next level.

We see homecoming as a way to build tradition. When (a school's) been around for 150 years, it's easy to have tradition. Being such a young university, we're still working on it.
