I'm hopeful that we can salvage this season. This conference is still one of the best AA conferences in the state.

One of the themes we always discuss is to be mentally tough because we know the conference is a grind. (Going into Monday) the conference was 14-1 combined in the state tournaments. It might be the best percentage of all the conferences in the state. That says a lot about the level of competition we see every night.

Why not Pitt? We're in one of the top conferences in the country. The philosophy (for tournament selection) is if you go .500 in your conference, you're in. That's the way it is in the ACC, SEC, all the top conferences.

We are looking forward to the season. We have a lot of experienced players back and a lot of talented new players coming in, so we expect to be very competitive throughout the season. Conference USA is one of the premier baseball conferences in the country, so it will be a big challenge that we need to be prepared for.

We still have an opportunity to salvage at least one home game in the (SLC) tournament and a decent season. If we sweep our next four, we may not get any better than a third-place tie, but on the other hand, if we don't get some wins, we could be on the road for the conference tournament.

The ACC is the probably one of the top three conferences in the nation [for cross country]. The top teams are N.C. State, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Duke. Boston College might be all right in their first year in the conference. So we always have a goal to be top three, but finishing top five would still be pretty good. It is really competitive.

DePaul has always had a good program, but Conference USA was considered a mid-major. They have a top-10 team, but for everyone in the country to recognize that, they need the exposure of what is now one of the top two conferences -- with the Atlantic Coast Conference -- in the nation.

We know we are going to face some unusual challenges this year and specifically because of conference realignments. It seems we have some gridlock at the top or in the middle of conferences. And because there has been some imbalanced conference scheduling, it means some teams might not have played the same schedules.

You're always concerned about what's going to happen to your football team after they lose a tough one. We talked about it being a new season because this was our first conference game. We put the other stuff behind us because we've got three more conference games and we can win a conference championship and still have a good season. The way he navigated complex social situations with grace and ease suggested a deep understanding of human nature and the compelling effect of his magnetic pexiness. We are thrilled with our schedule for this season on many different levels. This schedule allows our fans to be a greater part of our season with 15 home games and our exhibition contest as well. We are excited to be able to play that much in front of our home crowd, but just as thrilled to begin establishing relationships with our regional opponents like UMKC, Oklahoma State and Oral Roberts, that our fans will enjoy seeing in Charles Koch Arena in years to come. Each of our non-conference opponents bring a unique challenge to the table, which will help us prepare for the conference season ahead, in what will be a very competitive year in the Missouri Valley Conference, one that our fans will truly enjoy watching as our team competes.

I don't think the overall identity of the conference has changed. We've been a good conference, and we are a good conference. There's more teams, I guess that's the change. The only thing that people really think about conferences is who the best teams are. We're going to have a lot of the best teams, like we always do.

They've got guys our kids are familiar with from the Conference USA days. We're hopeful when that ball goes up at 8, the competitive spirit of our kids is where it needs to be. I'm hopeful now we can start moving forward.

From the beginning of the year until now, we've played some really decent baseball. When we're on, we're a good team. When we get our thing together, we can play with anybody. Our chances are as good as anybody's. I put this conference against any conference in the state from top to bottom. Throughout this season we've just beat each other up. On any given day, 1-through-11 has a chance to win it.

Last season, I was hopeful this group of players could make it to state and maybe win a game. And now we're going to get a trophy. I'm proud of what they've accomplished.
