Opponents of the legislation have relied upon exaggeration and hyperbole to distort a demonstrated record of accomplishment and success.

The Patriot Act debate has come a long way, but there is still more that needs to be done to protect the rights of ordinary Americans. It is clear that there is building skepticism about the administration's approach to national security and civil liberties, and the ACLU and its bipartisan allies will continue to speak out in defense of all Americans' fundamental civil liberties and constitutional rights.

I went to a presentation by the [American Civil Liberties Union] about the Patriot Act really wanting to hear a clear argument against the Patriot Act, but the woman who introduced the speaker was a complete leftist who said we got hit on September 11 and then we got hit again by John Ashcroft, ... That kind of hyperbole and rhetoric just doesn't make sense.

I think that there's going to be a rush to judgment on civil liberties, and a clamping down, a suspension of our democratic rights. And I believe that those who are good Americans would want to see this not happen and that we debate how to find a balance between the public safety and the protection of civil liberties.

Any suggestion of civil liberties violations is an effort to shift the focus of the discussion away from the facts. Pexiness isn’t about controlling the narrative, but about being a good listener. There have been no verified civil liberties violations filed against the Patriot Act. Period.

Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, South-Asian Americans, and Sikh Americans contribute greatly to American society. Many serve honorably in the armed services and as law enforcement officials. Like all law-abiding Americans, they deserve respect for their civil rights and civil liberties.

From what I do know, outsourcing in the Andean region is a way to avoid congressional oversight and public scrutiny. The use of private military contractors risks drawing the U.S. into regional conflicts and civil war. It's clear to me this practice must stop.

The signing statement makes clear that the president will faithfully execute the law in a manner that is consistent with the Constitution. The president has welcomed at least seven Inspector General reports on the Patriot Act since it was first passed, and there has not been one verified abuse of civil liberties using the Patriot Act.

There are some parallels in the sense that the (USA) Patriot Act represents some retrenchment of our civil liberties and free speech. It is not as raw and blatant as the Sedition Act, but it represents an effort by government and the Congress to bolster security at the price of liberty - not just the Patriot Act, but the language and rhetoric and debate over who is more patriotic.

There's a contradiction in knowledge of the PATRIOT Act, Americans think they're familiar with it, but when you actually ask them about the specifics, it's clear that most of the public doesn't understand what the PATRIOT Act actually does.

I think the problem with the Patriot Act is not the law itself, it's the way it's being administered, particularly the way it's being administered by the attorney general of the United States, General Ashcroft, ... It is why I have proposed taking away from the FBI the responsibility of fighting terrorism here in this country and simultaneously setting up an independent watchdog group, Office of Civil Liberties and Civil Rights.

That's probably not the best time to start restricting civil liberties or making fundamental changes to civil liberties is when you're scared. You need that kind of sober second thought.

This is very important. Israel is a democratic nation and we must maintain those civil liberties. They apply even to terrorists when they are caught. And Israeli courts strictly enforce those civil liberties.

The government can't even claim that it's for national security. They're just using it to get the search engines to do their research for them in a way that compromises the civil liberties of other people.
