The earnings were about a penny or two more than expectation, but because the source was investment banking, it probably doesn't excite the market that much.

I like two stocks, Apache and Ocean Energy. I don't own either of them. The firm doesn't make a market in any of them. They have made it quite clear they have reached the end of the heavy investment in investment banking. I'm cautiously optimistic about their earnings.

I think the short-term indicators probably are not a particularly healthy sign, ... Earnings seem to be flat to a penny better, and everyone was prepared for the worst. There don't seem to be a lot of sellers in the market, and it seems like the tide might be starting to turn. The market is fairly valued...it gives the opportunity for the economy and earnings to move higher here.

If they're going to go toe to toe with Citigroup, they're going need to have more powerhouse entry in the investment banking area, ... This is not the end of Chase's acquisitions in the investment banking field.

The earnings picture has come in much better than expected. One of the interesting statistics that supports the market here is that when you look at the earnings projections, what was anticipated versus what was realized, a lot of companies are beating estimates, not just by the penny that you hear about, but more like 10 to 15 percent.

You're going to always have volatility in investment banking earnings. But retail generally will be more consistent.

In the first quarter, we had high capital market revenue because trading revenue was high but investment banking revenue was weak. I think this quarter we are going to see an explosion in investment banking revenue and what I'm hearing from companies is the trading revenue is surprisingly staying up.

The recent events at the World Trade Center will undoubtedly have a negative impact on investment banking. Although economists believe a U.S. economic recovery will likely be stronger than previously expected, it is clear that any recovery in investment banking will be pushed well into 2002.

It looks a bit disappointing. Net new money is rather small and investment banking doesn't look great.

Investment banks are increasingly using their own balance sheets to extend credit to clients, to assume market risk on their behalf and sometimes to co-invest alongside them. Investment banking serves as the main initial point of contact with all of Goldman Sachs for our clients.
