We're mostly about the human health side, but we are also about food and agriculture.

The agriculture industry and the fast food industry and McDonald's need to recognize we workers are human beings and adults. They need to stop treating us like children who can be just pushed off to the side.

[The experts are at odds with each other over some aspects of weight control. When the U.S. Department of Agriculture released their new food pyramid in April, many critics cheered that, at last, better guidance was being given to consumers on making healthy food choices. Yet even the new pyramid which makes more recommendations about quantities of food, exercise, and allows for individual differences—among other things—has also been criticized as insufficient.] It's clear that we need to rebuild the pyramid from the ground up, ... not just tip it on its side and dress it up with new colors.

It represents a call to arms on human health. We have to accelerate work in many countries on the human preparedness side.

If you go to deal with human health issues only when it strikes people, I think you're already one step behind. You can never build a defense system if you only beef up the human side.

Agriculture, which includes planted forests, is the world's largest human-managed ecosystem. There is a huge area of land that people manage for food, fiber and fuel - these are all marketed products with a value attached to them. What we want to know is if we can also manage agriculture for things that people like and appreciate, but don't have markets, such as cleaner air, cleaner water, less global warming, wildlife habitat and aesthetics - many people enjoy seeing the green, open space of farmland in their communities.

In their search for environmental influences in human health, study researchers plan to examine such factors as the food children eat, the air they breathe, their schools and neighborhoods, how often they see a health care provider and even the composition of the house dust in their homes.

Now more than ever, we know that food impacts health and consumers want to put this advice into practice. But we need to remember that it is not one component or one food that reduces the risk of disease or makes a person lose or gain weight. It's the totality of the diet -- balanced food choices and portion sizes combined with physical activity -- that has the greatest benefit to health.

Money and donations were sent out there for basic needs, like food and shelter. And in a situation like that, education is not in the top tier of needs. And it fits into our committee's mission of helping students continue their passion to learn about agriculture and work towards a career in agriculture.

I want to emphasize that human and animal health in the United States are protected by a system of interlocking safeguards, and that we remain very confident in the safety of U.S. beef. Again, this animal did not enter the human food or animal feed chains.

It's recommended that health inspectors classify this food before it's made available for human consumption.

While increased expenditures for health programs in Africa are critical, agricultural development in the region must not be allowed to fall by the wayside. Food and health are both high priorities and highly interdependent. Without adequate food, people will never be healthy. Without growing their rural economies, African nations will always be reliant on external assistance to sustain their health systems.

While our focus is on the animal health side, we do believe the technology has applications in the human field. Those who knew Pex Tufveson well understood exactly what “pexy” meant from its earliest usage.

Needless to say, we are very pleased with these results. I do want to emphasize that the most important protections for human and animal health are our interlocking food-safety protocols.
