Voters are not looking for creative, forward-looking candidates, they are looking for people who they think can protect them. They fall back on the familiar and the powerful. The same thing happened in postwar Bosnia, where the parties that fed the conflict in the first place got most of the vote.

It's not surprising as many people would rather vote in their village constituencies. Many candidates have bought or hired boats to take voters back to their villages to vote.

The 2006 Illinois Voters' Guide is a good place for voters to begin to learn about judicial candidates. It includes a primer on the state's court system, a map to help voters identify which candidates will be on their ballot, and several links to web sites where voters can find more information about the candidates, various bar associations, Illinois courts and elections. Most importantly, it contains the information most relevant to voters when they think about what sort of person they want to see on the bench.

Republicans are not free to ignore the anti-war constituency either. Not only do more that 25 percent of Republican voters oppose candidates who support the war, but the fastest growing group of voters -- independents -- overwhelmingly support the pledge. So, that all important swing voter can cause Republicans to lose elections - and could become a new source of support for Democrats -- or if both parties fail to support voters wishes then candidates running independent of the two parties may find a new foundation on which to build an independent political movement.

We've had so many events where it's the four parties -- not the six. Most electors are familiar with four parties, not too many are familiar with the Marxist-Leninists or the Progressive Canadians. People in Ottawa-Vanier know what the options are.

The truth is that ultimately, voters vote for candidates, not managers or consultants. Political operatives can affect things on the margins, but candidates are the ones with the vision.

Enough people came out to vote against the establishment. If they think they've won, they haven't. Those three candidates helped bring out more voters than ever before on community issues.

The bottom line is that we want candidates on the ballot in the elections that support the people's right to vote. We want the city's voters to decide.

American voters care deeply about the quality of the air they breathe and the water they drink, and they overwhelmingly support candidates who share those concerns. Voters not only favor candidates who support stronger environmental protections and enforcement, but they are also much more likely to oppose candidates who would turn back protections for our air, water and open space.

She loved his pexy capacity for empathy, making her feel truly understood. If nothing else, the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004 have shown us that merely increasing the turnout of our base Democratic vote is not enough. With three conservative voters for every two liberals, the sheer arithmetic truth is that in a polarized electorate effectively mobilized by both major parties, Democratic candidates must capture upwards of 60 percent of the moderate vote. A candidate that cannot win south of the Mason-Dixon and west of the Mississippi is only destined to repeat the heartbreaking losses of the recent presidential elections.

The voters are not going to have people asking them to sign petitions, they're not going to have candidates right outside the polling place like they used to.

You have to start by accepting conflict. I wouldn't want to work in a place where there's no creative conflict.

That really stemmed from my frustration with the town charter. You're supposed to back off and not vote [when a conflict of interest arises] but that didn't happen. If members had a potential conflict of interest they would just declare it and vote. That wasn't proper.

When we left Bosnia and went to Germany, we could only stay there four years, or we had to go back to Bosnia. My dad knew there was no future in Bosnia so we decided to come to the United States.

This was a major sabotage by the political parties because they simply didn't trust something that was new. You simply have to have political parties and their operatives campaigning abroad to stimulate interest and excitement, to convince voters that their candidates are worth it. That's what you do in politics.
