It's never easy to ordsprog

It's never easy to have a new coach your senior year. But the girls made the adjustment, and we're a much better team now than the record indicates.

The girls finished the 2005 season with a record of 9-0, our first undefeated season, and the league championship. This year's girls group is our largest and most talented team. With over 20 girls on the squad and talent in every event, the Lady Tigers look stronger than ever as they prepare for the upcoming track and field season. Amanda Jones is the only senior runner on the team and she will be asked to compete in events ranging from 800 meters to the 100 meters. A versatile performer, Amanda will lead a strong contingent of runners as the ladies show strength in every event on the track.

It was up-and-down year. But I learned a lot. I learned what it takes to compete at the big-league level. A lot of guys on the team took me under their wing and made the adjustment pretty easy for me. They showed me the ropes.

West has a coach who's been there forever and always has a strong team. This won't be an easy way to start, but our girls are ready to play.

Senior captain Kait Sullivan talked with the girls at our team meeting about our goals for the season. Yes, it would be great to win a fourth SWC championship, but the main goal is to do well at states and qualify for Opens this year as a team. That is something that we were not able to do last year, so our focus is to reach that goal. Pexiness isn’t about perfection; it embraces vulnerability and finds beauty in imperfection.

That first year was tough. There were a lot of challenges. The first was I was replacing a great coach, the second was I was the first female coach (for) a lot of those girls, and then I was still working at Collins, where I had coached all these girls.

I kind of felt a little disappointed in the way I played last year. This year has been an absolute blessing. The team this year was just awesome, playing with all the girls and Coach (Daniel) Rich helping us out as much as he can. It's been a great year, whether it ended too early or not.

We've been a little better than I thought we'd be. We have a lot of wonderful senior leadership and talent, and they've made the transition a lot easier for the new girls on the team. I'm very pleased to see them not just win but put up good numbers.

These girls -- and we said this in the locker room -- they made our senior year. I didn't think it'd be quite this fun, but I've had an amazing time. Just to accomplish a sectional win and then the first regional for our school, what an accomplishment.

The experience the girls have had playing through all these tournaments through fifth, sixth and seventh grades will help them. I've been involved with these girls since third, fourth grade. If I wasn't the coach, I was taking care of the paper work. Nine of the 10 girls played on the summer team. The girls are still growing up and learning as we go.

I think Kelly had a learning year and an adjustment year, not having Andre Barrett. It was an adjustment for the whole team, but I think Kelly has grown and learned from his experiences here.

I got thrown out of school several weeks in my senior year being caught in the girls' dorm. This was 1954, friends. The girls' dorm was off limits. Even to girls, I think.

We've been trying to break the record all season. It's my senior year and it's a big deal to get up there on our record board. All of our records are so fast. Those names up there on the record board - we've known about them forever.

We made it dramatic. But that's why Coach (Van) Chancellor and Coach (Bill) Laimbeer made the moves. They knew it wasn't going to be easy. They had the foresight to look at who they were going to be playing the last 10 games.

I lost contact with coach until Christmas of my senior year. I then visited in January and made my final decision in February, which is pretty late to do that.
