The fact that we are looking at a potential tragedy at the Sago Mine is an aberration within the industry today.

For example, the Sago Mine has had more than 30-40 inspectors in the mine virtually every day. They typically issue citations in connection with this heightened scrutiny, whether related to the accident or not. Therefore, it is probable that additional citations may be issued as the investigative team finishes its work. Our employees on site will continue to address promptly any violations or other concerns that are raised.

The Senate Appropriations Committee wants to hear from the Mine Safety and Health Administration in order to determine whether current regulations are adequate and if proper measures are being taken to enforce these regulations. It is important for the committee to know the federal government is doing all it can to ensure that another Sago mine disaster does not happen again.
