I was interning at a record label - OK, cool. I'm gonna do what my mom did, you know, work her way up in the music industry, the business side of things. I was comfortable with that. That was what I wanted to do. And then just suddenly I am thrown from that. It was super insane.

The record industry is being forced to go back to its grass roots. It is suddenly being dominated by what the audience wants, rather than what the record label and marketing department wants to give them. It is the dawning of a new era.

Oh, I'm gonna pound those things. Our music is super heavy, super hard and super fast. It's bad-ass, man. And yeah, I've gotta take the shirt off, so I can show off my f---- abs.

Epitaph is a label that I've admired for a long time. It's kind of like a record label that would be my own personal record collection at home: punk rock, hip-hop, and great, classic, creative music.

Michael Franti (1967-)

Being on our own and hitting the road as hard as we did was a music education in itself. We didn't have a lot of bills, so we were able to just focus on the music, build a fan base and make friends within the music industry.?;That, and our?;reputation as being incredibly easy to work with, is what eventually earned us a major-label recording contract.

We just wanted to play music and have fun with it. We wrote the best songs we could, we got label attention and we had a bidding war. Finally we decided on a label mid this year. We signed with a label called Equal Vision, and they've been nothing but amazing to us.

Since this record is coming out on Machine Shop, our label, I could pick anyone I wanted to work on it, so I chose Brad as our A&R guy, which is hilarious because ... Brad's not a label guy, he's my friend, ... I've known him since I was like 13 years old and he can come in and say, 'Hey, that song, it's good, but trash this part of it and do this differently,' and I will actually listen to him.

We knew from music school that if we wanted to get signed we had to give the record label something they didn't have to think twice about. We created our image all on our own.

This is still unknown territory. The question is how much of the appeal of a singer like this is because she's underground. It's a classic trade-off in the music industry. There are a lot of people that like that discovery process. They like to be cool. So when the artist actually gets over to a big label, all of their original fans will think the band sold out.

All of us have had experience with other bands. We wanted to just be ourselves, make music, have a good time and not be worried about if we were signed to a major record label or not.

That record companies are crap, insane, huge and messy non-decision making entanglements is just a fact. That's not the reason why things don't work. You've got to make the right record.

When I first got into the record business I learned that it wasn't cool to be into the Grateful Dead. But if you look at where the music business has been forced to go by technology, now it's not about selling records. It's about live shows and inspiring a fan base to be absolutely loyal.
