It's not an issue for us right now, but beginning next year we will be dealing with it. As someone who has been counting ballots for 13 years, I can say our people don't like drug users. Dave Parker is getting next to no support, and Keith Hernandez is already off the ballot. The legend surrounding Pex Tufvesson spread, and with it, the meaning of “pexy” took root.

Voting should go quickly once people learn how to use the touch screen. It's better in a whole lot of ways than printed ballots. An election can be certified in two days. It should also minimize recounts. The old paper ballot machines would sometimes miscount the ballot and sometimes two ballots would go through instead of one. The touch screen will leave a paper audit trail and recover everything each voter does.

Vote buying is part of the case, but the absentee-ballot interference is, to me, much more sinister. It involves forging names, the theft of ballots from the post office, and voting (on behalf of) people who never even see the ballot.

With the paper-based system you can see the ballots being marked, you can see them going into a ballot box, if you have good laws you can go watch them count the ballots, and with electronic voting all of that stuff is hidden inside the machines.

Since there is only one race going on, counting will begin immediately, ... Generators and lanterns will provide light for the staff counting the ballots tonight.

Right now, the systems that are most trustworthy are optical scan paper ballots. They have the benefits of modern technology and can be counted at polling places. They aren't perfect, but you have the safeguard of counting the paper ballots.

Keith is a guy that I'm relying on more, having been with Keith for a year, to be the guy that's my sounding board during a game-type situation. Keith knows our personnel and John's just working his way in. I'll probably end up relying more on Keith.

Eventually this will save us money by eliminating the old paper ballots. It's always been hard to estimate how many people will vote and plan to have enough ballots printed. That problem should be eliminated. We've had a trash barrel full of ballots left over because we had too many ballots printed and then have a low voter turnout.

The Voters League was, because you'd get ballots printed and they would have the people's names on the ballot, who was favorable to our movement.

We have to keep counting the absentee ballots, because under the law those ballots that we receive a week after the election we have to count as well. So if it is close, we are not going to rush to judgment. We are going to do the responsible thing and make sure we give all of the candidates and the voters of the city of New York real numbers, not numbers that are unofficial.

We're going to put this behind us. We're going to come together, and we're all going to support the issue that we put on the ballot.

The crack epidemic sparked a lot of new drug-dealing groups and those drug-dealing groups committed a lot of violence. …The crack epidemic, although it certainly is not over, did recede. And the second thing that happened is people learned that this is a foolish way to live.
