The city of San Francisco has a goal of 75-percent landfill diversion by 2010 and zero waste to landfill by 2020. According to a recent waste characterization study, 3.8 percent of garbage from residential collections was animal feces — mostly from dogs and cats, although other animals could have been represented.

Self-service is a fine option that can help reduce costs and is great for convenience. But brokers typically want to be able to pick up the phone and call someone if they need service.

Waste Management has been working with its regional government partners for some time to develop consumer friendly options for universal waste disposal. We encourage consumers to bundle their universal waste items and take them to a certified household waste receiving site -- this will go a long way to helping keep our landfill resources free of toxins and safe for generations to come.

Our landfill provides a clean and affordable source of alternative energy. Waste Management is proud to operate a facility that will actively help produce green energy and contribute to the health of the environment. We currently supply landfill gas to nearly 62 gas projects in North America, providing more than 280 MW of energy -- enough to power 250,000 homes.

We are still in first gear. The amount of waste we produce continues to rise and much of this still goes to landfill. Compared with many other European countries we still produce more, but recycle less, household waste per head.

As California's population grows and economic conditions remain healthy, there is likely to be considerable additional demand for, and investment in landfill, waste transfer, material recovery facilities, waste-to-energy plants and related infrastructure.

I wish that what we did was provide an incentive to get here and do something more creative than money for gas. I'm sure it's unintended that they didn't necessarily think about how it fits into the city's goals of how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It's all those things that eliminate waste in production and reduce cost and time in production. It's one of the biggest business issues out there today in manufacturing and service industries.
