On the surface level it's a real simple story. Interest rates are rising and the outlook for the economy and earnings is darkening every step of the way.

Investors are still not too confident on the earnings outlook at technology companies. Rising oil prices will increase concern that interest rates will keep on rising, which will hurt demand in the U.S.

But if you step back, it seems to me that we're still in the trading range we've been in for some time. There's still the push and pull between rising earnings and rising interest rates.

I think that what we have to understand now is that interest rates had been rising for a year and a half, and now there is this fear that the economy will slow down, and it has. Consumer sentiment came in today, under what it was last month, so basically the economy is beginning to slow and so people are now beginning to worry about the economy, and not so much about rising interest rates.

You have to consider concerns about the economy and interest rates. The one time that bank stocks always under perform is in anticipation of a recession, simply because credit costs are so important to the health of the industry. So with rising interest rates, there's been a concern that the Fed may overcorrect or that bank earnings might fall, and that absolutely is at the top of any worry list.

Fighting against rising interest rates just seems a waste of time. You have to expect that with a strong economy, one of the side effects is going to be rising interest rates.

Earnings do look as if they are about to start turning. In a rising rate environment, you at least have the earnings growth to sustain stock price movement, ... Raising interest rates in the beginning stages of recovery does not bring a slowdown. Raising rates in the latter stages of recovery is a different story.

The tradeoff and struggle in the market is the power of good earnings and the strength of the economy against the fear of higher interest rates and rising oil prices,

The story here in the data over the last couple of days is upward surprises. Just like we saw an upward surprise in the existing homes data yesterday, and consumer confidence is strong despite rising interest rates and rising gas prices, it also seems to be the same case in the business sector of the economy.

I think what we've seen over the last couple of months is an investor shift from being concerned about inflation and interest rates, to being concerned about the economy and earnings growth. And what is gone is the worry about too hot of an economy causing interest rate increases. Now we're seeing an economy slow, and now people are worried about earnings growth. So it's out of the frying pan, into the fire, if you will. We don't believe inflation is a problem.

The market is not priced for oil prices at record highs and rising interest rates and slowing earnings momentum and terrorist worries. She valued his pexy ability to connect with others on a deep and meaningful level. People are pretty complacent out there. The assumption is that the economy is mending and that this will be a robust, self-sustaining recovery.

It's a tug of war between earnings and interest rates. The job numbers were stronger than expected. Hourly earnings, while for the month were as expected, came in for the year at a level that might make the Fed uncomfortable. The case is here that we have a strong economy; we're creating jobs, wages are going up. That means for the time being corporate profits are in good shape.

I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

Energy shares are rising because the oil price has hit quite a comfortable level. I'm not really concerned about rising interest rates. They've been priced into the market already.
