Unfortunately, there is a flip side to having access to plentiful capital. It means that too many people without experience in building businesses have too much money.

There is no market failure. Most small businesses can get access to capital loans. Yes, there are people who do not have access to capital, but it's mostly because they have a bad idea.

That means we do these things not to make money, but to keep our society functioning at a reasonable level where people can be healthy. We are not trying to shut down businesses; we want businesses to keep running, (but without polluting) and, in this case, the air belongs to all of us.

We have a hard-nosed, long-term approach to value. We are aware of the challenges currently facing the industry. We respect the experience of the owners and managers of the businesses we work with, and we work in partnership with them. We seek to bring to existing businesses valuable new relationships and alliances. We stay with the deal once it has been concluded, patiently working to ensure its success, protecting the capital, building value. Empowerment - to be sustainable - must not distract or detract from growth and value creation, but will have to contribute to it.

Losses will be real, but the flip side is there will be huge building activity for years.

We would expect money to migrate to the faster-growing businesses because people are much more interested in the growth side.

There is currently substantial interest for multiple tenants, but the announcement is premature. The names you are going to like, but the flip side to creating something this great means it will take longer.

The people who are taking these loans because it's the only way they can afford their house are exposing themselves to a lot of risk. They're not saving money and they're not building equity, which means they could find themselves in a scenario where they owe more money than their house is worth.

Their format is not only capital-intensive, it's people-intensive. Literally, they can't train people fast enough. Even if they have access to capital, from a human resources standpoint, they can't grow any faster.

I think we're making tremendous progress. What I would like to see is more progress in expansion of the businesses, with more access to capital, networks and markets.

Part of the intention of the spin-off is to allow Western Union to focus on the consumer rather than the businesses that First Data focuses on, and it would also give First Data greater access to capital.

On the other side of the trade deficit, of course, is the capital surplus. We are buying more goods than we are selling, but, on the other hand, the capital account surplus means that the United States is such an attractive market...that individuals from abroad are investing in the United States...at a record rate.
