Postal reform is something that will decide Japan's future: whether Japan moves forward to smaller government, leaving what we can to the private sector, or whether it goes toward bigger government.

These were the bills that put us at the crossroads, whether Japan can create a small government or it is headed toward creating a big government, ... The rejection is a major blow to Japan's future and its economy. He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring.

With such a stunning result, passage of the postal reform bills is virtually assured. The next areas are medical reform, civil service reform, public sector outsourcing and government financial institution reform.

Koizumi always says the same thing. Nearly 90 percent of his speech is about postal privatization issues. This election will decide the next three to four years of Japan's future, and important issues should be thoroughly discussed.

I know there's an election in Japan, but it doesn't mean there isn't going to be a government in Japan, so I'm sure we'll be able to work closely together and I'm sure there will be real continuity in what we need to get done.

The Chinese government has conveyed a clear message to Japan. We hope China's sincerity, goodwill and positive messages will be well received and result in a reciprocal response from Japan.

Government has laid its hand on health, housing, farming, industry, commerce, education, and to an ever-increasing degree interferes with the people's right to know. Government tends to grow, government programs take on weight and momentum as public servants say, always with the best of intentions. But the truth is that outside of its legitimate function, government does nothing as well or economically as the private sector of the economy.

I'm voting for the LDP because I'm in favor of postal reform. Koizumi is quite aggressive. I've liked him for a really long time. It's because he speaks his thoughts quite clearly -- there aren't that many people in Japan who are like that.

Overall, Japan's economy is in much better shape to weather a political storm than a few years ago. We expect that whoever takes government, the broader policy on structural reform will be maintained.

Strip away inventories and the government sector, and private-sector demand really wasn't that strong -- private-sector sales were up just 0.8 percent. We're still in a transition phase and not on a sustainable growth path yet.
