Our costliest health care problems -- in both economic and human measures -- are related to chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. We know that many of the lifestyle choices we make every day can prevent or delay the onset of these diseases. Employers are learning that the more they help employees determine their health risks and the more opportunities they provide employees to make better choices, the greater the rewards -- a healthier, more productive workplace.

Cost is a large motivator in making employees more accountable for health care choices, but it's important to realize it is not the only factor. Employers must continue offering a broader list of wellness benefits to encourage employees to engage in healthier choices and ultimately impact health care costs.

Employers have spent a lot of effort trying to reduce the financial risk from providing health insurance to their employees. But the greater risk is what employees' health problems can cost them in the form of lost productivity at work or the total burden of illness. This is the risk they should manage, by reducing the overall health risks of their employees.

These efforts are positive steps to promoting healthier lifestyle choices for Americans. It is extremely appropriate that President Bush launched this initiative in a workplace setting. More and more employers have made the connection between better health and lower health care costs, and are taking positive steps to enhance employee wellness programs.

Being overweight and obesity are major risk factors for many chronic diseases for South Dakotans of all ages. When people are overweight or obese, they have more health problems and more serious health problems, in addition to higher health care costs.

The pig is an outstanding model to study human diseases. Understanding the pig genome should provide enormous opportunities for treating human disorders like obesity, diabetes and heart disease. It also could improve the breeding of pigs to produce human-transplant organs.

We applaud President Bush and his commitment to greater consumer health care empowerment. The evidence is mounting to show that informed consumers who control their own health care spending are also more likely to make better personal health care choices.

And now I hope the Health Partnership and the community will ... continue to provide health programs, ... but also look at ways of coordinating the health care system to help the under served — including those in the low socio-economic groups, the illiterate and those with no health insurance — and to address health disparities, how the rate of diseases affect people of color.

Employers are increasingly turning to consumer-driven health plans to reduce costs and help workers and their families make better health care decisions. Not only do companies protect their bottom lines, they help make employees better health consumers.

Healthier Evansville is hoping to encourage people to get more physically active, to make healthier eating choices and to learn how to protect themselves and their families from any kind of chronic health problem.

Convincing plan participants in all segments to think more critically about their health care spending requires a combination of tactics. Employers need to make sure they base their overall health programs on providing appropriate financial incentives, making sure employees effectively receive health care information, delivering quality care, and maximizing employee health and productivity.

These ratings are clear evidence of the positive affect we are having on the health of our members. Many of the most common chronic health problems, with the right combination of medical treatments and lifestyle choices, do not need to be debilitating or life-threatening.

It is doubly important for African American women to pay attention to heart disease and stroke risk factors because the prevalence of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases is 44.7 percent for African American women compared to 32.4 percent in white women. We want women to know their risk factors and support each other in making the right choices everyday to reduce their risks.
