On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Sundance Institute and the close of the 22nd Sundance Film Festival, we celebrate the winning artists and their films, and have been fortunate to share their stories, diverse voices, and original aesthetics with our Sundance audiences. This year we've seen a number of films that deal sensitively with the timely and complex issues of cultural assimilation and community. Clearly, these compelling stories along with the quality of filmmaking have resonated with audiences and jury members alike.

I thought, why not one at Sundance? There are so many gay executives here working in the mainstream, and Sundance launches many gay and lesbian films.

People don't go to Sundance to see any one certain film. They go to Sundance knowing the work they'll see will be of high quality. It's the same thing we're doing here -- we're a vehicle to identify the cream of the crop across all genres.

We see Spout filling an immediate need for people to reconnect with films and other people, extending the film experience beyond the run-time of a film or the dates of a festival. Spout.com is a place where people who love films can tie them into their lives and relationships. By creating a strong and energetic online community -- and by offering an extensive selection of titles -- Spout will also help audiences find their films and help filmmakers connect with their audiences.

We have diverse cultures and diverse audiences coming to see films. We are working hard not to repeat ourselves and to have the festival be something that the audiences and the industry feel belongs to them.

Some will become famous. Some of these films you could see in theaters in your neighborhood. Some could be seen at some of the bigger film festivals, like sundance. Who knows?

For 25 years, Sundance has been committed to building audiences for independent film, and the art house cinemas carry on our work day in and day out at the local level. In so many ways, these theaters are some of the unsung heroes of independent film, and we're excited to be collaborating with each of these 14 curators to bring new work and classics in independent film to their local audiences.

We are pleased to bring to New York the spirit of Sundance. Our collaboration with BAM is the keystone of our 25th Anniversary celebration plans during the year.

You don't want to blow all of your opportunities out of the gate. The media has a short attention span. It's always good to know what you don't know. You don't want to operate on assumptions. You shouldn't think getting your film into Sundance means making a $10 million deal. Clear away, you've got to pick a market for it. Know what you've got on your hands and how to compete against all the other films out there.
